Compared to swimming with the current, swimming against it demands more physical strength. This is the basic tenet on which phase difference-based ultrasonic flow monitoring is based. Sending and receiving ultrasonic waves alternately between two sensors that are placed across from one another. 
The supplied ultrasonic flowmeter signal is received in phase, or without phase difference, by both sensors when static mediums are employed. phase shift occurs when flowing media are used. When measured against the current direction as opposed to in it, the phase shift is 
different. The flow’s velocity and the phase difference are directly inversely proportional. Based on the flow’s velocity and the pipeline’s known diameter,
 the flow volume is calculated.
